Apple and Samsung are considered as the top two best brands for mobile phones today, or even for other tablet PCs. The latest additions to the brands; iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S4, have been taking the world by storm, and causing debates between fans from all the corners of the world. Here at YMOZ online store, we will break down the perks and drawbacks of these two big fish in mobile phone and telecommunications technology. Here’s Apple vs Samsung, brand comparison.
Comparing Customer Satisfaction
The latest ASCI (American Customer Satisfaction Index) results shows two of the latest products from Samsung – the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 topped the list at first and second spot respectively, while Apple’s iPhone 5, iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 got the third, fourth and fifth spot from the top 10 list of smartphones. The survey however, did not include the Samsung Galaxy S4, the brand’s latest handset that was said to leave Apple in the dust.
While Apple is the more expensive between the two, it is the Samsung’s mass market and low cost appeal that beat the US brand. The popularity of Samsung in the US is strongly attributed to its Android Operating System.
Before the brand comparison can go out of control, as there are simply just so many things involved, from type of device to compare, quality, etc., let’s put the two brand’s best smartphones on the table and see who gets the upper hand.
Comparing Their Top Smartphones
The rivalry of these two top brands is well represented by their respective flagship phones – the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S4. The former is viewed as Zen-like simplicity with swift and smooth performance, while the former looks to overwhelm its rival with bigger screen and whopping amount of features. At the first glance, Samsung seems to have the upper hand, as it is easily shinier and newer. But this is not what a smartphone comparison is about.
Design and Build Comparison
Winner – iPhone 5
Because iPhone 5 is made up of metal, not polycarbonate, one can easily argue that Apple had won this category. Also, the polycarbonate body of Galaxy S4 makes it feel a bit “plasticky” and prone to easily accumulating dents.
Display Comparison
Winner – Samsung Galaxy S4
With 5in full HD super Amoled 1920x1080 441ppi display, the Galaxy S4 is one of the nicest we've ever had the pleasure to use. This is way better than iPhone 5’s 4in 1136x640 Retina 326ppi.
Operating System Comparison
Winner – iPhone 5
iPhone 5 runs off Apple's iOS 6, while Galaxy S4 runs on Google's Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean Operating System. Samsung’s OS can cause a lot of annoyance with tons of useless apps that doesn’t really boost the handset for more innovative functionalities than iPhone. Apple’s iPhone 5 feels more secure and bug-free software.
Performance
Winner – Samsung Galaxy S4
The Galaxy S4 feels smoother and faster than iPhone 5, this is because of Samsung’s quad-core 1.9GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, which is easily more superior than technically lower-specced A6 dual-core in iPhone 5.
Camera
Winner – Samsung Galaxy S4
Technically speaking, the S4 boasts better cameras, featuring a 13MP rear and 2MP front snapper. The Apple iPhone 5 by comparison boasts 8MP rear and 1.2MP front cameras. Of course, image quality isn’t directly related to Megapixel count, however, Samsung’s camera simply shoot better images under most conditions that Apple’s.
Battery
Winner – iPhone 5
Battery life is really a key factor in smartphones today, but unfortunately, this is where many brands’ newer models fail to complete. Sadly, S4 suffers the same issue, as users will regularly need to charge their phone midday just to make it last until the end of the day.
Storage
Tie
Both phones are available at 16GB, 32GB and 64GB options, But the iPhone features more usable memory space, with 13.5GB free space at 16GB, compared to S4’s 9.1GB free available space at 16GB. Samsung however, gives users more options to expand their memory through microSD.
Results says tie simply because, not all phone users want to expand memory.
Overall Winner - Samsung Galaxy S4
It’s a neck and neck battle between the two, but Samsung’s phone came on top via close decision.
Though this doesn’t always equate the brand’s overall performance, comparing their flagship phones is a good barometer on choosing what the strongest points and weaknesses of each brand in mobile technology.
Also Samsung is gaining more popularity with its Galaxy S4 not just in US market, but all over the world, compared to Apple’s iPhone 5.
